Fic: Just a Dancer

Title: Just a Dancer
Pairing: Lucas/Zac
Wordcount: 578
Disclaimer: They both own themselves. I claim all as lies and make no profit.
Warnings: Disney Channel Original Movie cast. That’s got to be warned for.
Notes: I apologise. I have not posted fic in over a year, and this is what I offer you? I’m sorry. There's probably something wrong with me. Set during the filming of HSM3: Senior Year. Lucas is Lucas Grabeel, who plays Ryan Evans, and Zac is rather obviously Zac Efron (Troy Bolton). Un-beta’d, because seriously, who could I send this to? I think I had to get it out before I could keep working on my bigbang because everytime I read Ryan I thought of the film, because I just watched it. Anyway, sorry.

Lucas isn’t exactly hiding, he’s just really tired. They’re only one week into filming and the homeroom set is empty and Ms Darbus’ chair is really comfortable.

“Could you teach me a jazz square?” a familiar voice interrupts Lucas’ respite, in a rush. Lucas starts. He hadn’t heard Zac come in.

Lucas has picked Jazz Square up as a nickname of sorts, on set, so he thinks it’s a dig and is about to laugh it off when Zac amends, “Well, obviously you could, I mean, would you?” from a desk in the front row.

Lucas shrugs and says, “I’m not much of a teacher. Ryan maybe, but not me. I’m just a dancer.”

“I wouldn’t say just a dancer. We can all dance, but Olesya’s a trained ballerina and I saw you showing her a thing or two at prom rehearsals a few weeks ago.”

Lucas lets his head fall back against the chair again, fixing his eyes on the join of two ceiling tiles instead of looking at Zac. Olesya’s ballet is easily a lot better than Lucas’, but he is trained in ballet, tap, hip-hop and jazz, thanks very much.

Lucas knows Zac doesn’t mean anything by it – yeah, they can all dance, but that doesn’t mean they’re all dancers – so he just shrugs again.

“I’m just more used to dancing with a partner,” he says.

“Well if you don’t go for the teacher-student thing, then pretend I’m Ashley or Olesya,” Zac says.

And even though Zac is a poster pin-up, he’s no diva and he’s never been anything but nice to Lucas, but Lucas still can’t see how this can be anything more than a joke.

“Why do you want to perfect a jazz square?” he asks.

The period of quiet that follows eventually gets the best of Lucas’ curiosity and he looks up. Zac is still sitting at his usual front desk.

“I really have no idea,” Zac answers, holding his hands open in front of him.

Then he flashes Lucas a sheepish smile and it’s all perfect white teeth and would have teenage girls swooning around the world, and Lucas feels his stomach attempt a jazz square. And okay, maybe Lucas came out to the cast after the first film and maybe everyone knew long before then anyway, but Lucas is not a teenage girl. This is not on.

He wants to tell Zac that this is not on. Zac, with his stupid smile and perfect hair and earnest face. He wants to tell Zac “No” and “Go away,” but then Zac is standing on the platform beside him, hand stretched out to help him up and all Lucas says is, “I don’t even like jazz squares,” and takes Zac’s hand.

“That’s cool,” Zac says. “I’m pretty sure I know how to do one anyway. It was just the first thing that came into my head.”
“Then what are-” Lucas starts but Zac hushes him and says, “Dance with me.”

Zac takes Lucas’ other hand, places it on his shoulder and rests his own on Lucas’ waist.

“Ashley would let me lead,” Lucas says and Zac laughs easily. His breath huffs across Lucas’ face as he waltzes them around the small platform.

Lucas slips out of Zac’s hold in a graceful turn and when they face one another again, Lucas is leading, and Zac smiles. They dance and Lucas decides he definitely isn’t a teacher, but he’s happy being just a dancer.

I'd rather have the truth than something insincere.
